Beethoven :: essays research papers
BEETHOVEN à à à à à Ludwig van Beethoven was born 1770 in Bonn Germany. His mother was a singer in the service; his father was a court musician that had little motivation and a drinking problem. His father noticed that Beethoven had a gift at a young age, and began teaching him piano and violin. But Beethoven was a hard learner, he was self-involved and impatient. This probably led to why he was a loner and why he only went to academic school for three years. Beethovenââ¬â¢s father wasnââ¬â¢t the only one who saw Beethovenââ¬â¢s talent, Gottlob Neefe (a German Organist) become young Beethovenââ¬â¢s mentor. Gottlob thought Beethoven was the next Mozart, so he sent him to Vienna to meet him. But Beethovenââ¬â¢s mother got sick so he had to come back home before he met him formally. By the time he came back to Vienna, Mozart had died so Beethoven sought help from Hadyn, another German composer. He became Beethovenââ¬â¢s second mentor and taught him new styles of music. Beethoven did his first shows in Vienna in 1795. He was the first composer that was not supported by wealthy persons; instead Beethoven supported himself with money from selling his music. By 1778, Beethoven started hearing humming and whistling sound in his ears, and it got worse. A few years later, he became completely deaf. Although he was deaf he could still write music. He finished his first symphony in 1800. In 1802, Beethoven became depressed and thought a lot about suicide. He went to a small village in Germany where he stayed for a few years. The next couple of years Beethoven created his most impressing masterpieces. In 1812 he had completed over twelve of his best works and he was known worldwide. But after this Beethoven did not release any music for awhile and he got in trouble with the law over some royalties to songs. But in 1817 he began composing again and he did through 1824. In 1824 Beethoven composed two of his most memorable pieces, the Ninth Symphony, and Ode to Joy, these were two of Beethovenââ¬â¢s best compositions. The first time Beethoven conducted the Ninth Symphony, the crowd, at the end of it was at a tremendous applause. And Beethoven was still with his back turned on the podium until one of the ââ¬Å"soloistsâ⬠turned him around. In 1820 Beethoven won custody of his nephew Karl since his brother had

Origins of the Shadow in A Wizard of Earthsea Essay -- Essays Papers
Origins of the Shadow in A Wizard of Earthsea Ged, the main character in The Wizard of Earthsea, by Ursula K. LeGuin, through an act of pride and spite unwittingly unleashes a powerful shadow creature on the world, and the shadow hunts Ged wherever he goes. After failing to kill Ged the first time, he learns the only way to destroy the shadow is to find its name. What Ged must realize is the shadow was created by the evil in his own heart. Also, the shadow is not entirely evil, and Ged can actually draw strength from it. In doing so, Ged will realize that the only way to discover the shadowââ¬â¢s name is to discover that he and the shadow are one. Carl G. Jung in Man and His Symbols, describes the shadow as containing the hidden, repressed, and unfavorable ââ¬Å"tendenciesâ⬠of the conscious personality. ââ¬Å"Such tendencies form an ever-present and potentially destructive ââ¬Ëshadowââ¬â¢ to our conscious mind.â⬠This shadow takes form in mythology as a dark, shadowy, and imposing figure or as ââ¬Å"the cosmic powers of evil, personified by dragons and other monsters.â⬠(Henderson 111) This shadow is shown to Ged in different forms: ââ¬Å"...Like a clot of black shadow, quick and hideous...it was like a black beast, the size of a young child, though it seemed to swell and shrink; and it had no head or face, only the four taloned paws with which it gripped and tore.â⬠(LeGuin 61) As it appeared when the shadow was first created. Later as the shadow pursued him, it held the same form. ââ¬Å"The shadow did not have the shape of man or beast. It was shapeless, scarcely to be seen, but it whispered at him, though there were no words in its whispering, and it reached out towards him.â⬠(LeGuin 81). Once Ged stops running, the shadow takes on a more identifiable form ââ¬Å"...now some likeness to a man, though being shadow it cast no shadow.â⬠The last form the shadow takes are the images people that Ged has come across in his life, ââ¬Å"An old man it seemed, gray and grim, coming towards Ged; but even as Ged saw his father the smith in that figure, he saw that it was not an old man, but a young one. It was Jasper: Jasperââ¬â¢s insolent handsome young face, and silver-clasped gray cloak, and stiff stride. Hateful was the look he fixed on Ged across the dark intervening air...and it became Pechvarry. But Pechvarryââ¬â¢s face was all bloated and pallid like the face of a drowned man, and he rea... ... to face his fears. ââ¬Å"In silence, man and shadow met face to face and stopped. Aloud and clearly, breaking that old silence, Ged spoke the shadowââ¬â¢s name and in the same moment the shadow spoke without lips or tongue, saying the same word: ââ¬ËGed.ââ¬â¢ And the two voices were one voice. Ged reached out his hands, dropping his staff, and took hold of the shadow, of the black self that reached out to him. Light and darkness met, and joined, and were one...ââ¬â¢Estarriolââ¬â¢, he said, ââ¬Ëlook, it is done. It is over...the wound is healed...I am whole, I am free.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (LeGuin 179-180) On the condition that one succeeds in assimilating and integrating the conscious mind the lost and regained contents. Since they are not neutral, their assimilation will modify the personality, just as they themselves will have to make certain changes. ââ¬Å"If we could see our shadow, we should be immune to any moral and mental infection and insinuation.â⬠(Jung 79) Bibliography: A Wizard of Earthsea, Ursula K. Bullying: Relational Aggression and Boys
Bullying 1. Why do you think that bullying is an issue to study in Lifespan Development? I believe that bullying should be studies in Lifespan Development because Bullying is a multifaceted form of mistreatment, seen in schools and the workplace. It is characterized by the repeated exposure of one person to physical and emotional aggression like teasing, name calling, mockery, threats, harassment, taunting, hazing, social exclusion or rumours. Lifespan Development is the exploration of the biological, cognitive, and psychosocial changes that occur across different periods of life. So I believe the two go hand in hand. 2. Describe the three components or types of bullying behavior, as observed by researchers. The three important components of bullying : 1. Bullying is aggressive behavior that involves unwanted, negative actions. 2. Bullying involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time. 3. Bullying involves an imbalance of power or strength. 3. Explain how gender influences the styles of bullying. In contrast to girls, boys of any age and ethnic group tend to be physically aggressive (e. g. , hit, kick, slap, push, or punch) . Also, research shows that physical abuse tends to occur more often among boys than girls at all educational levels (e. g. , elementary, high school, college). Also, male college students tend to bully and be bullied through physical and verbal forms of bullying (e. g. , name-calling) more often than college girls. Also, boys may be more accepting of bullying, than are girls. That is, boys may like a girl even if she bullies others. In contrast, girls may still befriend boys that bully, but tend to dislike girls that bully. At the core of these differences is childrenââ¬â¢s and, indeed, societal beliefs about acceptable behaviors for boys and girls. Many people may see bullying among boys as ââ¬Å"just boys being boys. â⬠So, girls may accept this attitude and tolerate boysââ¬â¢ bullying. However, girls may be less accepting of girls who bully if it is seen as overly aggressive. Girls tend to bully other girls through the peer group. Rather than bully a targeted child directly, girls more often share with other girls (and boys) hurtful information about the targeted child. For example, a girl may tell a group of girls an embarrassing story about another girl. They may create mean names, gossip, and come up with ways of letting the girl know that she is rejected from the peer group (for example, saying mean things about her on Facebook, using her email address to send harassing messages to everyone on her email list, texting her a death threat). These are called ââ¬Å"relationalâ⬠bullying because they attack relationships and friendships. Another example of bullying experienced more often by girls than boys is sexual (e. g. , touched in private body parts or received sexual messages). Sexual types of bullying may occur at school, in the general community, and on-line. In recent Canadian and U. S. surveys, a significant number of girls report receiving unwanted sexual messages. Fewer boys reported being targeted. This form of bullying combined with messages about rejection from friendships is just as hurtful as being physically attacked, maybe even more hurtful. Rejecting messages can devastate a girlââ¬â¢s sense of enthusiasm for school and learning, self-esteem, and hopes for the future. These forms of bullying can be particularly time-consuming and difficult to resolve given that they involve many people over a period of time. It may even involve adults who react aggressively in defence of their children. In addition, parents and school authorities do not always detect gossiping or other covert bullying behaviors because itââ¬â¢s generally hidden from adults. Thus, they may not be disciplined and ââ¬Å"caughtâ⬠, which may increase the severity and duration of these behaviours. It may even occur among ââ¬Å"friendsâ⬠, making it seem that itââ¬â¢s just usual peer conflict. However, when one girl feels powerless in how she is being treated, then bullying is occurring, and adults need to intervene. A Dogs Tale - How to Train a Lonely Master Essay
A Dogs Tale - How to Train a Lonely Master - Essay Example Mon seems really great. He is responsible and hard working. But he does not know how to have a life. He does care to have a happy break from his busy hours. I can even say that staying with him for a week seems lonelier than staying in the pound. He does not care about me. He does not even take care of himself. Yes, he feeds and bathes me. But he does not walk me at the park. He does not go out unless he needs to buy food and the other needs. My master needs me. I suddenly barked and barked while he was working. He turned around and shoo me away. He was definitely annoyed at what I was doing. But then again, I need to get his attention. I need to help him. I continued to bark and he stopped working. He turned away from the table and he went to the kitchen to find food. He fed me but I did not touch the food. He really seemed confused. I think he is trying to understand why I barked and not eat when fed. I moved closer to him. He looked at me and mumbled words I cannot understand. I b arked and then I rolled over. He smiled. I think he understood what I wanted him to do. He grabbed a ball and threw it. I ran, picked the ball and ran back to him. He smiled again. We played for few minutes and then I went to the kitchen to eat. He went back to his work too. I was happy that he understood me and he seemed happy playing with me. Every day, I do this to him and he responds quicker than the first time. When I roll over the floor, he already knew what to do. I am happy he is learning. Every day, Mon cleans his car. Every time he does this, I go with him. When I know he is almost done, I bark again and I move closer to the pail of water. He is trying to figure out what I was trying to do. He tried to give me water but I did not move closer, rather I barked again. He then poured the water on me. I stayed unmoved. He knew that I wanted to take a bath. I was happy he understood me again. One day, while we were playing outside the house I saw a girl walking her dog.

The Impact Of Global Warming On Developing Countries Essay
The Impact Of Global Warming On Developing Countries - Essay Example Global warming has been directly linked to increased emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases. The Earth is warmed by the radiant heat from the rays of the sun, which is generally equal to the amount of energy that is radiated back from the Earth in the form of infra red radiation. Thus the temperature of the Earth remains constant. However, the temperature of the Earth is directly dependent upon the composition of its atmosphere and when there is an excess of carbon dioxide and similar gases in the atmosphere, it blocks the infra red radiation from the surface of the Earth, trapping heat in the lower atmosphere and creating a "greenhouse effect" which increases global temperatures Rapid industrialization has resulted in increased energy use, with the resultant multiplication of carbon dioxide emissions. According to Roberts (2004), energy demand in countries like India, China and Brazil is developing so fast that it may double by 2020, while in the developed countries, the demand for power is fast outstripping supply, raising the specter of blackouts. In fact Roberts (2004) also points out that ââ¬Å"China has seen dramatic increases in its energy consumption in recent years (pp. 143ââ¬â145). In the words of one scientist; ââ¬Å"China's rapid industrialization has led to upward revision of predictions... While previously we thought in terms of doubling the strength of the CO2 content of the pre industrial atmosphere, current thought is moving toward a triplingâ⬠(Broecker 1586).
